E-drug: Gentamicin units
---------------------------------------------
The Primary Health Care program this unit is associated with in Tibet
AR in China is implementing the IMCI (integrated Management of
Childhood Illness) program. Drugs needed include Gentamicin. The
locally available Gentamicin is labelled, not in mg but in
international units - with one 2ml vial labelled as containing 80,000
IU of gentamicin. The hospital staff assure us that this is the same
as 80 mg but there's nothing in the packaging to confirm this.
Please, has anyone heard of genta being labelled in IU like this?
I have checked Martindale and all the international catalogues and
references I can find.
Thank you very much
