Dear colleagues,
Over the past year, SATELLIFE has engaged in a consultative process with nurses in Tanzania and conducted a survey of their information needs. Nurses in other countries in Africa, current subscribers of our HealthNet News series of three newsletters, also provided their input. Based on this feedback, SATELLIFE, in collaboration with the MGH Institute of Health Professions, a graduate school affiliated with the Massachusetts General Hospital, will launch HealthNet News-Nursing, dedicated to nurses in Africa and other resource-constrained countries.
HealthNet News Nursing, sent monthly, aims to provide relevant, reliable information that can help nurses in patient care, administration, leadership skills, and project planning and management. Knowledgeable nursing professionals will select content from nursing journals to support the on-going development of nursing skills based on medical and health knowledge. Contributing authors from the MGH Institute of Health Professions, under the editorship of Inge B. Corless, RN PhD FAAN Professor, will also write articles for the newsletter with special attention being paid to the resource-constraints under which nurses work and care for patients in Africa.
Freely available to nurses and health practitioners in low-income countries, HealthNet News-Nursing will be distributed via email. Given the alarming trends in the brain drain of nurses in Africa, as well as the toll of HIV/AIDS, we hope that HealthNet News Nursing will provide continuing educational support to those nurses who remain working under difficult circumstances.
SATELLIFE's (<http://www.healthnet.org/>www\.healthnet\.org\) mission is to serve the urgent health information needs of the world's poorest countries through the innovative use of information technology. The MGH Institute of Health Professions (<http://www.mghihp.edu/>www\.mghihp\.edu\) is an interdisciplinary graduate school that integrates classroom learning with research and clinical experience to prepare skilled health care specialists.
