E-DRUG: Help to find a short video on itinerant drug sellers in Africa or Asia
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear e-druggers,

Does anyone know where I can find a short video on itinerant drug sellers
in Africa or Asia? I know such videos have been produced in the past but do
not know where I can find such a video now. I am teaching Global Pharmacy
Masters' students about medicine sales in the informal sector in low income
countries and it would be good to show them the reality of informal
medicines sales in some countries.
Thanks for your help.

Hi Kathy,

The only video I know of is the excellent "Tiim" produced by PSF (Pharmacists without borders) in about 2007. [I think 2004 BS]

There is a story about it here:
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2636347/

I have a copy, and also have it on a private youtube channel for my students to view. According to the article, the WHO has the copyright. I will send you a private e-mail with the link, because this seems to be acceptable under the WHO copyright restrictions. If anyone else wants this, please e-mail me,

Best wishes,
Pauline

Dear Kathleen,

In case you are looking for different resources, a few months ago, National
Geographic magazine published a really interesting coverage about itinerant
drug sellers in Haiti.

Here is the link to the online article:

Dear Kathleen,

Medicine" produced by BBC 2 and shown first time in the BBC programme "This
World" in July 2005. It may be worthwhile to contact BBC Education &
Training department and ask them for a copy. It is about the situation in
Nigeria.
For more go to
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/programmes/this_world/4656623.stm

The second best film produced is called "Dealers of Death" made by the
Western Pacific Regional Office of the World Health Organization. I do not
know the year of issue and I cannot tell whether they still disseminate
appropriate copies. It was issued around the same time like the film "Bad
Medicine". It is about the situation in South East Asia.

Further, on the homepage of the Global Pharma Health Fund (GPHF), a charity
run by Merck in Darmstadt (Germany), you can find some more videos material
on the trade in falsified medicines from around the world.

With best regards

We (USP, USAID, French Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs) produced a few PSAs and short documentaries related to this area, with a focus on counterfeit medicines in Southeast Asia.

Pharmacide Mekong documentary film (52-minute film on counterfeit medicines in SE Asia):

Falsified Medicines in SE Asia (filmed using the GPHF Minilabs for field detection of counterfeits):

This is an older PSA we produced in 2008 on counterfeit anti-malarials:

Finally, although not directly related, this is a short PSA on the dangers of purchasing medicines from internet sources:

Thanks
What I find amazing is that despite the evidence, donors still promote
programs that sell good medicines in private sector including the informal
outlets thus almost making fake medicines legitimate by such mixture.

A few years ago, I visited big pharmacies in Ghana and asked for malaria
pills. I was offered a choice of products that were part of global malaria
program pre-qualified by WHO, others not pre-qualified but made by
reputable generic companies as well as pills of obscure origin!

The biggest problem in the public sector is shortages which drives people
to get medicines in shops that sell salt, sugar and pills
