[e-drug] HIV patients in Sub-Saharan countries with ARV patents

E-drug: HIV patients in Sub-Saharan countries with ARV patents
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mike Palmedo has calculated the number of persons who are living
with HIV, for each level of patent protection in sub-Saharan Africa,
using the August 2001 PhRMA Survey of ARV patents. According
to Mike's calcuations

* 40 percent of the persons living with HIV in Sub-Saharan Africa
live in countries where 7 or more ARV products are protected by
patent,
* 48 percent live in countries with 6 or more products under patent
* 55 percent live in countries with 4 or more products under
patent, and
* 74 percent live in countries that have already issued at least two
patents on ARV drugs, indicating the existance of a patent regime.

Since many of us are concerned both with the current ARV drugs,
and the next generation of ARV drugs, these data are evidence that
patents are an important barrier for access in Sub-Saharan Africa,
both now and in the future.
