E-DRUG: impregnated bednets
---------------------------
[although not really a drug, impregnated bednets for the prevention of
malaria are definitely essential. So I allowed this message as our
colleagues in Surinam have to cope with severe flooding of 1/3 of their
country. Some tables from Rob's overview were omitted as they cannot
be reproduced easily in plain text. Please contact Rob directly if you
have additional information at verhager@cq-link.sr

Dear E-druggers,
The Ministry of Health in Suriname requested me to explore the
possibilities to quickly obtain bednets in order to prevent a malaria
outbreak in the water flooded areas in the interior of Suriname. I did
a quick search on the internet and produced an overview. I like to
share this overview (below) with you for two reasons:
1. To get reactions, especially in case there is more information which
we could use here in Suriname
2. To have this information available for others who may be in need of
bednets in emergency situations or otherwise.
Kind regards,
Rob Verhage

Memo on Emergency Supply Bednets
Paramaribo, 14 May 2006
Subject
Supply of Long-lasting Impregnated Nets (LINN), large 160x180x150cm
(double) Note that there also extra large bednets (190x180x150cm); In
Suriname the largest seem to be best when used with a hammock.
Findings
The two WHO pre-qualified bednets are Olyset and PermaNet. Sumitomo in
Japan is the manufacturer of Olyset bednets. The Vestergaard Frandsen
Group is an international company in Denmark which specializes in
complex emergency response and disease control textiles, with offices
all over the world.
From the Roll Back Malaria website (http://rbm.who.int), I found an
overview of pre-qualified bednets (see annex). The indication is that
delivery time is 6 months, but, I assume, that this is only for large
quantities (>100,000). Costs FOB approx. USD 5.00 for a large bednet
(double). Substantial costs for shipment need to be calculated,
especially when shipped by air, as bednets are bulky. As 35,000 bednets
were indicated, I would estimate total costs up to USD 210,000 (FOB
175,000 and airF-I 35,000)
RBM website gives a number of suppliers/manufacturers but advices to
procure through the large institutional buyers of LINN which are
UNICEF, WHO, International Red Cross (IFRC), Netmark (works only in sub-
Saharan Africa) and Population Services International (PSI,
www.psi.org/malaria; PSI manages ITN projects in 24 countries in
Africa, Asia and South America and procured and distributed approx 3
million bednets already in 2006).
Suppliers that may have LLIN in stock are the following:
IDA Foundation (www.idafoundation.org) has developed DURANETR, a bed-
net which has been treated with Deltamethrin, a safe and effective
insecticide used in vector control worldwide. Due to a special
production process, a DURANETR can be washed for at least 20 washes
without losing its insecticidal properties. Note that DURANET is not
pre-qualified by WHO, so we may need to ask why not.
DURANETR is exclusively supplied by IDA to the not-for-profit health
care sector and is available in 3 sizes and packed with 10m of rope and
4 metal hooks to facilitate proper installation.
In the IDA catalogue I find two types for large:
Q88300 mosquito net 160x180x150cm, LLIN,
polyester 1 piece
Q89100 mosquito net 160x180x150cm, LLIN,
polyethylene 1 piece
(polyethylene last 5 years against polyester 2-3 years according to RBM

2. IMRES has been mentioned as a supplier with bednet stock. However,
no information to that extent can be found on the IMRES website:
www.imres.nl
E-mail: info@imres.nl
3. I found one bednet on the Medical Export Group website (MEG;
www.meg.nl): Mosquito net 130x180x160cm, impregnated, mesh 156, denier
75
Email: sales@meg.nl
4. Missionpharma indicates on their website (www.missionpharma.com)
"., we provide a full range of bednets, including insecticidal-treated
bednets (ITN) and long lasting insecticidal-treated bednets (LLIT)."
However, I could not find any in their catalogue.
E-mail: info@missionpharma.com
5. With offices in Switzerland, Denmark, India, Ghana, Nigeria,
Vietnam, Kenya, and agents in different countries, the Vestergaard
Frandsen Group (www.vestergaard-frandsen.com or www.permanet.com)
ensures fast deliveries at very reasonable prices PermaNet, one of the
WHO-prequalified by WHO.
E-mail: by clicking on the map on the website on a city in your region.
Options for quick supply of bednets:
I think the best option is to request UNICEF, IFRC and PSI to indicate
availability and costs of the bednets needed. Donors may be more
willing to fund the supply through one of these organizations and as
they are large scale buyers and distributors they may be able to
provide from stock maybe even from somewhere within the region.
Alternatively, request one of the suppliers with stock (as mentioned on
their website, i.e. IDA and Vestergaard Frandsen Group) for a
quotation. The request must contain the condition "delivery from stock"
for at least part of the 35,000 (the urgent need identified in
Suriname). Prices FOB and costs for Freight and Insurance quoted
separately.
Finally, request one of the other suppliers mentioned above for a
quotation.
