E-drug: Improving community drug use: 2001 course
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
The good news for all those working to improve the use of
medicines is that the second international course on Promoting
Rational Drug Use in the Community will be held in Entebbe,
Uganda, from 11-24 November 2001, hosted by Makerere
University's Child Health and Development Centre.
WHO's Department of Essential Drugs and Medicines Policy and the
University of Amsterdam have developed the course, in
collaboration with experts world wide. Held for the first time in
Bangkok last year, the course has been widely acclaimed for its
innovative approach to the vital but much neglected area of
community education on drug use. It is intended for staff from
ministries of health, universities, development agencies,
nongovernmental and other organizations, and interested
individuals.
Over two weeks and working with a very experienced international
faculty participants will gain "hands on" experience in how to:
* effectively identify and prioritize community drug use problems;
* choose and develop appropriate intervention strategies and
communication channels;
* pretest materials;
* evaluate impact;
* fundraise and network for support and sustainability.
The course emphasizes that interventions must take into account
the social and economic context in which health- and
medicine-seeking behaviour take place, and be developed with
community input.
Teaching methods in this highly participatory course include group
activities, field work, presentations and discussions. Participants
spend the final two days preparing a detailed plan of action to
tackle an important community drug use problem in their home
country. They also receive a set of session materials and a small
core communications library.
The fee of US$ 2,950 covers tuition, course materials and shared
hotel accommodation at a beautiful site overlooking Lake Victoria.
Single rooms are available for an extra US$ 20 per night payable by
participants. The fee for local participants without accommodation,
breakfast or dinner is US$ 1,500.
