E-DRUG: Indian generics safe from seizure while passing through EU (3)
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi E-druggers,
It required personal visit of Indian Prime Minister to EU for this understanding to clear the misunderstandings. Sustained efforts due to lobbying of the activists, criticism from the rationalists, and pressure writings from the concerned journalists resulted in getting the relief.
Kudos to all, who showed that the right will can prevail over wrong decisions. May the marginalised populations continue to benefit from the affordable generics!

Dear E-druggers,
The seizure is just one part of the problem of this EU/India Free Trade Agreement!
It is easy for both parts to say that the problem is solved when at the very same time the ACTA agreement increases the confusion between fake and generic drugs, and will allow authorities to seize generic drugs when suspected of being counterfeits! So we cannot relief until ACTA is erased.
The EU / India FTA includes measures that will increase data exclusivity, and prevent India to produce and export generic drugs. Such measures were enforced in Guatemala after a FTA with USA: experts note an 840 % increase of the price of drugs since the signature of this FTA!
So when EU says there is no danger on generic drugs, this is just a lie that should not deceive us.
Best,

Dear E-druggers,
FYI, when I asked the WHO what their plans were for seizures that could
take place for Swine Flu vaccines, the response was 'no WHO shipment had
ever been seized'.
If it can happen to UNITAID then it can happen to
WHO. This is neither a credible response nor a professional one based on
the mandate to safeguard public health. WHO's task ought to have been
facilitating alternative routing of shipments away from the EU, a task
no doubt the countries/companies themselves will do given the
flexibility of containers and consolidated shipping.
South Africa has excellent shipping infrastructure serving the East
(Asia) and West (Brazil) that is cost effective the last time we
inquired into possible solutions.
And a sense of realism please in face of victory (as a noted African
liberation activist said - claim no easy victories), the Commission is
continuing to ignore an EU Parliament decision on the terms of the
Indian FTA. It seems like democracy and crass money making making still
has a victor.
