Training Course on Promoting Rational Drug Use
April 22 - May 3 2001
Tehran, Islamic Republic of IRAN
Faculties of Medicine and Pharmacy of the Tehran University of Medical
Sciences in collaboration with the Iranian Ministry of Health and the
WHO/EMRO inviting physicians, pharmacists, health program managers,
officials from ministries of health, universities and private
organizations interested in improving the rational use of drugs to
participate in the "Training Course on Promoting Rational Drug Use".
Objectives
The training course will focus on methods of studying inappropriate drug
use with particular emphasis on the role of prescribers, dispensers, and
patients. Participants are expected to learn practical approaches for
studying and implementing the rational use of drugs. key features
including drug policy, essential drug list, indicators of rational use of
drugs, and proper interventions to change inappropriate pattern of drug
use in the daily practice of health providers in their own country.
Design
The training course will be conducted in English and will consist of
presentations, discussions, group activities, and field visits. The
training course is highly participatory, and the exchange of experiences
and ideas among participants adds depth to the learning process. Training
course materials are based on those developed by the INRUD, WHO, MSH and
IRANIAN MOH. The participants will be exposed to a wide range of
international experiences and materials.

Faculty
A team of experts from WHO and Faculties of Medicine and Pharmacy of
Tehran Medical Science University will train and discuss the latest issues
in rational use of drugs with the participants. Some of the trainers are:
* Dr Ebrahim Azizi, Assistant professor of Pharmacology, former director
of National Prescribing Auditing Committee in Ministry of Health and
trainer in several national courses in promoting of rational drug use
* Dr A. Majid Cheraghali, Associate professor of Pharmacology, WHO
consultant, former director of national center for rational drug use and
director of Iran Drug Selection Committee, organizer and trainer of
several national courses of rational drug use
* Dr Hassan Farsam, WHO consultant in field of rational drug use and
traditional medicine, Professor of Pharmacy, with more than 30 years of
teaching and research experience in Pharmacy
* Mr. Peter Graaff, Regional Advisor Essential Drugs and Biological in WHO
Eastern Mediterranean Office with extensive involvement in promoting
programs on rational drug use in EMRO
* Dr Ali Haeri, WHO consultant, Ph. D. of Pharmacology and trainer in
several national and regional courses in primary health care and rational
use of drug.
* Dr Kathy Holloway, medical officer in the dept. of Essential drugs and
Medicines Policy, WHO Geneva, with 20 years clinical and public health
experience in the UK, Burma, India, Nepal, latterly focusing in the area
of promoting rational use of drugs
* Dr Stephen Lonsdale, Genral Practitioner, WHO consultant with twenty
five years experience in UK, Australia, India, Malawi, developing and
transitional countries mainly in field of primary health care and rational
use of drugs and developing STGs.
* Dr M.Ali Mohaqqeqi, Assistant professor of Medicine with specialty in
teaching rational use of drug for student of medicine
* Dr Abolhasan Nadim, WHO consultant, Professor of Epidemiology with 35
years of experience working in primary public health field.
* Dr Ahmad Siadati, Director of Iran National Rational Drug Use promotion
Center in Ministry of Health, Professor of Pediatric and expert in
rational use of antibiotics in children
Fees and Application
The fee of US$2500 covers tuition, training course materials, shared
accommodation and all meals. Those unwilling to share accommodation must
be prepared to pay extra for single rooms (rates are available upon
request). Participants should plan to bring sufficient money for
incidental expenses like laundry, postage, phone calls, and etc. Airfare
and health insurance are the responsibility of the sponsoring
organization. Applications and fees are due no later than March 10, 2001.
