PRESS CONFERENCE INVITATION:
and
Oxfam and Health Action International report launch:
Trading Away Access to Medicines
Residence Palace, Rue de la Loi 155, Brussels
Tuesday 20 October: 11.00 - 12.00h
The European Union trade policies put pharmaceutical companies'
interests ahead of the health needs of the poor and are adding to the 2
billion people currently without access to medicines, according to a
report that Oxfam and Health Action International Europe will launch on
20 October in Brussels. The two organisations accuse the EU of "double
standards" and of promoting policies that directly contradict the
obligations the EU undertook at the World Trade Organization and under
the Millennium Development Goals.
For example, EU rules have been used by customs officials in the
Netherlands and Germany to seize shipments of legitimate generic
medicines destined for poor countries since late 2008.
The key findings of the report will be presented by Elise Ford, head of
Oxfam International's EU office and Teresa Leonardo Alves, Health Action
International (HAI) Europe Coordinator.
