*Organization*
The Access to Medicine Foundation is an international not-for-profit
organization dedicated to improving access to healthcare technologies for
people in low and medium-income countries. Based in Haarlem, the
Netherlands, the Foundation is a small, innovative, organization working
closely with and supported by a broad network of experts from governments,
inter-governmental agencies, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, investors,
NGOs and academia.
Through the Access to Medicine Index, the Foundation aims to stimulate the
world’s leading pharmaceutical companies to improve their efforts in
providing access by providing impartial assessment and measurement of
companies’ efforts. The next Index will be published in the autumn of 2012.
*Position*
In addition to preparing for Index 2012, the Foundation is currently
building in-house research capability and conducting explorative studies
into other healthcare technology sectors, with the ultimate goal of further
expanding access to those in need (and therefore the goals and mandate of
the Foundation).
The Foundation is currently looking for a *Research Associate** *to assist
with desk-based research, predominantly of the vaccine sector, and in
particular that based in the emerging markets. The Associate will be tasked
with undertaking landscaping of the vaccine sector and its operating (and
policy) environment with the aim of accumulating a body of evidence to
inform a subsequent analysis and a consultation process. The Associate will
also support and be involved in preparation and implementation of the
analysis and consultation phases of the project. The position will involve
limited international travel and exposure to thought leaders and experts.
*POSITION AND TASKS*
· Collecting and analyzing quantitative and qualitative data and
information from a variety of sources (academic literature, commercial
reports, policy documents etc)
· Synthesis of data and the provision of summaries and analysis for
discussion and expert review
· Liaison with a broad stakeholder network (governments, funders,
investors, civil society and industry in both the developed and developing
countries) working in the vaccines and medicines sectors.
· Preparation – and possible presentation of – meeting agendas,
reports, powerpoint presentations and other materials as required.
· Supporting tasks where required, including meeting organisation,
contact liaison, administration etc
*REQUIREMENTS*
Essential:
· Bachelor’s degree required preferably in scientific,
economics/business or bio-medical discipline
· One to two years experience as a researcher, analyst, or policy
adviser, with at least some of this experience in the international health
or pharmaceutical field.
· A capable researcher with strong analytical and data synthesis
skills
·Fluency in spoken and written English
·Excellent computer literacy and written and oral communication
skills
· An independent, self-starter adept at managing and prioritising
workload.
· Comfortable working with and in a small team (albeit with an
extensive external network) and to pitch-in as required.
*Preferable:*
·A post-graduate qualification in: international public health,
health policy, health economics, international development, international
relations or related discipline.
· Specific experience or knowledge of vaccine sector and markets would
be highly advantageous
·Experience working in a developing country health sector
·Knowledge (spoken and written) of Dutch would be an advantage
· Willing to live in or near Amsterdam/Haarlem, The Netherlands.
Comfortable with some International travel (including to the developing
world).
*ORGANIZATIONAL POSITION*
On a day-to-day basis, the Research Associate will report to the Research
Project Leader. But will ultimately be under the responsibility of the
Managing Director of the Foundation.
