Established in 2007, *Results for Development (R4D)* is a Washington
DC-based organization dedicated to accelerating social and economic progress
in low and middle income countries. R4D creates real solutions to complex
problems by incubating new models to address the unmet needs of the world’s
poor. R4D brings to bear its depth of expertise, analytical rigor, extensive
networks, and implementation experience to work on a broad and ambitious set
of development issues -- improving health, governance, and education in poor
countries and leveraging global markets for large-scale social gain.
*Position Overview*
R4D is recruiting a Research Fellow for a year-long position with the Center
for Global Health R&D Policy (healthresearchpolicy.org). Since its inception
in 2009, the Center for Global Health R&D Policy has undertaken a portfolio
of rigorous assessments of innovative policies and financing mechanisms,
such as incentive prizes, joint intellectual property management and pooled
funding, to accelerate the development of drugs, vaccines, diagnostics and
other health technologies for neglected diseases.
This position offers a unique opportunity to carry out agenda of high impact
policy analysis to influence global health funders, governments,
philanthropists, private investors, advocates and other actors engaged in
global health R&D. Examples of possible topics could include (but are not
limited to): US and other select donor government strategies on global
health R&D and new product introduction; capacity/potential of BRIC
countries in global health R&D; innovations in the next generation of
product development partnerships (PDPs); novel types of market guarantees
and of other pull mechanisms.
Recent PhDs looking for a post-doc year as well as more experienced
researchers or practitioners are encouraged to apply. The ideal candidate
will be a true policy entrepreneur, interested collaborating with the R&D
Policy team, but will also be enthusiastic about defining and carrying out
high quality work independently and using R4D’s access to key decision
makers as a platform for translating ideas to action.
This position is a one-year position, with possibility of renewal.
Specific Duties include:
- Defining, developing, and undertaking creative, policy-oriented
research on global health R&D
- Writing policy assessments, working papers, policy briefs, blogs and
short commentaries targeted to policy makers, academics, and other
practitioners in science, industry, and PDPs
- Tracking policy developments in relevant areas
- Contributing to the development of a policy outreach and dissemination
strategy
- Engaging in related policy outreach activities and speaking engagements
- Supervising and providing mentorship for a program associate/research
assistant
- Providing review and feedback on the work of other analysts
Qualifications:
- A doctoral degree (or masters degree with significant experience) in
health economics, public health, development policy, science and technology
policy or related discipline
- Familiarity with global health R&D issues
- A record of a variety of research methods to real-world problems to
identify practical and action-oriented solutions
- Demonstrated ability to take a project to completion
- Demonstrated ability to effectively build relationships with diverse
stakeholders
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Ability to work independently within a small, closely-knit organization
and to contribute to the development of new initiatives
- Good humor and collegiality essential
Pluses:
- Direct experience working in global health R&D policy and practice
(e.g., the pharmaceutical/healthcare industry, PDPs, or donors on R&D policy
and strategy)
- Record of policy relevant publications and/or working papers
- Experience living or working abroad, particularly in developing
countries
- Skills/experience in undertaking research using mixed methods
(qualitative and quantitative)
