E-DRUG: Lancet Commission on Essential Medicines Policies asks for inputs
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Lancet Commission on Essential Medicines Policies (EMP) will meet in
London March 9-11, 2015 to discuss the scope of our report, identify key
achievements and challenges in the area of EMP and discuss visionary
recommendations. It will be the first face-to-face meeting bringing together
all 19 Commissioners, our technical experts and editors.
Over the last months the commissioners have worked on a draft outline of the
report, identifying areas of expertise within and outside the Commission to
develop individual topics.
During the 3-day meeting, participants will present proposals for data and
methods of analysis that will underpin the description of the key
achievements and challenges. Breakout groups will focus on individual
aspects such as quality of medicines, financing, research and development,
appropriate use of medicines, monitoring and evaluation of EMP.
Our plenary sessions will host lively discussion of cross-cutting themes:
1. Access to medicines through Universal Health Coverage (UHC)
2. Health system strengthening
3. Global trade
4. Human rights
We welcome your involvement! Send us your thoughts on priority topics that
you feel should be included in the focus of our agenda for the London
meeting and ultimately in our final report.

Background
In October 2014, the Commission and select technical experts met at the
University of Groningen in The Netherlands to develop an effective work plan
for the report. Commissioners reviewed the policy timeline since the Nairobi
meeting of experts in 1985 to identify achievements and existing challenges
over the last 30 years. The Commission began identifying potential new
challenges in need of creative solutions over the next 20 years.
