[e-drug] Mexico: medicines access survey

E-DRUG: Mexico: medicines access survey
------------------------------------------------

A team of researchers at the National Institute of Public Health of
Mexico conducted an analysis of availability, affordability and prices
of medicines in Mexico City in 2009/2010 using the HAI/WHO suggested
methodology.

In the public sector, medicines included in the sample were unavailable
in more than 50% of those health establishments visited.

In the private sector, originator product prices were on average 4.5
times higher than their corresponding interchangeable generics (e.g
originator product of fluoxetin, was 172 times more expensive than its
generic counterpart). Almost 50% of all treatments analyzed were
unaffordable.

The results have been published on the HAI website. The full report (in
Spanish) is also available electronically.

I am happy to receive comments or questions or suggestions for further analysis.
