[e-drug] Micronutrient supplementation in HIV patients (3)

E-DRUG: Micronutrient supplementation in HIV patients (3)
----------------------------------------------

Dear e-druggers.

I agree with Daniel that positive living and good nutrition is paramount
to the management of HIV/AIDS. However, that alone may not be adequate.
It requires a comprehensive approach with antiretrovirals an integral
part. This includes opportunistic infections prophylaxis and treatment,
proper counseling and psychosocial support. I wish to reiterate the role
that antiretrovirals has played in reducing the morbidity and mortality
in HIV/AIDS patients. Good nutrition and positive living coupled with
timely and appropriate management of opportunistic may delay the
pathogenesis of the disease and the initiation of antiretrovirals.

Nutrition may be easily addressed by advocating for eating a balanced
diet from the natural sources rather than a rush into designer
supplementation. It would be more feasible to fund a farm that grows
cereals and vegetables and keeps a dairy cow than to buy supplements,
some of whose qualities and efficacies are not guaranteed.

All drugs have potential short term and long term toxicities yet they
have been used to save lives, so are antiretrovirals. In addition
research galore into unearthing better treatment options for HIV is
abound.
