The Merck Index mentions two patents: A Belgian one from 1975
(827,127) and a US one from 1976 (3,965,143). No mention of any
extension.

Information on U.S. drug patents can be obtained from the FDA website
www.fda.gov/cder/ The Orange Book gives US patent and FDA exclusivity
information for listed drugs. Also patent information is available in
a separate listing under Regulatory Information.
According to the information available in these databases (patent
information listed as having been last updated on 8/16/00), the patent
on Misoprostol (Cytotec) tablets expired on July 29, 2000 (Patent No.
4301146). However, a patent is still current for
Diclofenac/Misoprostol combination tablet (Arthrotec) and this expires
February 11, 2014 (Patent No 5601843).
You may want to contact FDA (CDER) directly to check that this
information is current and if any extension to this patent has been
approved.

Here may be the information you seek. The following abstract appears
to the first patent granted in the US which abstract uses the term
"misoprostol".
Following the abstract is a list of all other US patents granted which uses
the term "misoprostol". If there is a patent granted in effect continuing
misoprostol it should appear on this list. You can search the US patent
database at www.uspto.gov
