E-drug: More self reliance in drug production (cont'd)

Self reliance in drug production is important. This can not be
over-emphasized. However, one has to be very careful to ensure that
essential drugs are being manufactured in adequate amounts and not
just the vitamins, antihypertensives, cold and cough remedies etc, as
the experience in India tells us. Similarly, drug production in small
scale sector is not always bad even if it just involves the formulation
and packaging. But again, quality control is something that becomes
an important concern here.
