Medicines Shouldn't be a Luxury: Don't Trade Away Health in the
Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA)!
IP Out of the FTAA: Join the Campaign to Remove Intellectual
Property Provisions from the FTAA by Endorsing an International
Petition to Ministers of Trade in the Americas
Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) has launched a campaign to
increase awareness about the potential harmful effects of the Free
Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA) agreement on public health and
access to medicines, and to demand that countries in the Americas
uphold their obligation to put the health needs of people before
commercial and trade interests. FTAA is a proposed regional trade
agreement currently being negotiated between 34 countries in the
Americas. Specifically, MSF is calling upon countries of the Americas
to exclude IP provisions from the FTAA agreement altogether in order
to protect public health and promote access to medicines. MSF is
concerned that proposals put forward by the United States will
undermine the historic 2001 Doha Declaration on TRIPS and Public
Health, and threaten people's access to essential, life-saving
medicines throughout the region.
Your organization can help by endorsing this petition, which will be
delivered to Trade Ministers of the Americas at the FTAA Ministerial
Meeting in Miami in November 2003. Please read the petition text
(below), fill out the information below, and send your organization's
endorsement to kate.evans@newyork.msf.org.
