I think that what may seem as a promotion of a combination of
artemisinin or its derivatives and other anti-malarials is a good idea.
The experience with other major infectious diseases, notably
Tuberculosis have shown the merit in using combinations of drugs as a
means of retaining the effectiveness of these agents against the
causative organisms.
Regarding pediatric formulations, suppositories of artemisinin and its
derivatives offer a feasible alternative. While combination drugs are
promoted for adult patients and older children, I think that monotherapy
artemisinin would offer a good alternative for pediatric use.
