E-drug: Needs of district hospitals (cont'd)

The e-drug message from Dr Aman highlights an ongoing problem
related to defining an essential equipment list for district hospitals.

To respond to the specific queries:

a. For essential (drugs) medicines I would suggest that you use any
of the essential medicines lists from the region, which are levelled
lists. The EDLIZ from Zimbabwe is one such list, but other lists may
well exist that can be used.

b. Essential medical supplies. For this I would refer you to Page 160
of Managing Drug Supply 2. This was a list developed while
Managing Drug Supply 2 was being revised. A survey was sent out to
about 30 supply agencies or essential drugs program managers and
this was the summary list.

The Emergency Drug Kit has a useful list of emergency equipment.
This is available at http://www.who.int/medicines/library/par/new-emer
gency-health-kit/nehken.htm The 1999 Emergency Relief Items
Compendium of Basic specifications Volume 2, published by UNDP,
is another useful resource.

c. I am unaware of a list of medical or supply equipment, with the
exception of anaesthesia equipment described on Page 15-4 and the
Essential emergency list of equipment in the new WHO publication
Surgical Care at the District Hospital. This is available to download
from the web at http://www.who.int/child-adolescent-health/
publications/CHILD_HEALTH/Surgical_Care.htm

d. For laboratory and radiographic materials the only resource that I
am aware of are materials about the basic radiological system which
WHO promoted some years ago and the materials from WHO on the
Clinical Use of Blood.

I think this request highlights the need to move the Essential
medicines concept forward to be Essential Medicines and Equipment.
