E-drug: New efforts to undermine Declaration of Helsinki
---------------------------------------------
Greetings.
As many of you know, the World Medical Association revised the
Declaration of Helsinki in 2000. Since then, the Association has added
a footnote that undermines Paragraph 29, which would assure participants
in the control arms of clinical trials the best effective therapy during
the trial. Now Paragraph 30 is under attack. It is the Paragraph that
would assure that trial participants in the control arms of positive
trials receive the more effective treatment at the conclusion of the
trial. A Workgroup has proposed a series of conditions that would make
it much more difficult for participants to get post-trial treatment.
The World Medical Association is requesting comments on the proposed
revision. The best way to do so would probably be to send them a fax at
33-4-50405937 or to send an email to wma@wma.net. If you do not have
the time for detailed comments, you can vote and submit more limited
comments at the WMA's website, which is www.wma.net.
For Public Citizen's comments on the proposed changes, as well
as more documents from the WMA describing the proposed changes and how
to submit comments, please contact me directly. We encourage you to
submit comments by September 1, and to share this email with any
others you think might be interested, including relevant listserves.
Please cc me on any comments you
submit.
Thank you in advance.
