E-DRUG: New WTO documents relevant to access to medicines

E-drug: New WTO documents relevant to access to medicines
---------------------------------------------

Since there has recently been such an interesting discussion around
the impact of intellectual property rights on access to essential
medicines, I thought that people might be interested to know that the
WTO has just released its Annual Report. It's available in toto from the
WTO Document Dissemination Facility
(www.wto.org/wto/online/ddf.htm) as WT/MIN(99)/5, while the
workings of the Council on TRIPS are also available as a separate
document (IP/C/19).

Those folks interested in the economics of parallel importing might
also want to check out "Competition Policy and Intellectual Property
Rights in Developing Countries: Interests in Unilateral Initiatives and a
WTO Agreement," a paper written by Mohamed Lahouel (University of
Tunis III) and Keith E. Maskus (University of Colorado, Boulder) for the
WTO on-line conference, Developing Countries and the Millenium
Round. Pages 26-32 are particularly relevant. It's available as a pdf file
at www.itd.org/wb/dc_milpap.htm
<http://www.itd.org/wb/dc_milpap.htm> .
