E-DRUG: Non-commercial diseases

Dear e-druggers
Just to clarify that by non-commercial diseases I meant all diseases for
which drug R&D is sub-optimal due to the perception of poor commercial
returns. This includes the classic neglected diseases (and Western orphan
diseases) but drug companies have increasingly divested themselves of their
antibiotic and vaccine R&D portfolios as well. I think it's helpful for
Western governments to understand that, as drug R&D costs rise, more
diseases have started moving from commercial viability into the domain of
public responsibility. In other words, they need to find a solution not
just for the developing world, but also for their own constituencies. MM
