[e-drug] non-commercial diseases?

E-DRUG: non-commercial diseases?
--------------------------------

Dear E-druggers

About the "I just wonder what the definition is of
"non-commercial diseases"? WB]"

I think Mary's message reflects on diseases like African Trypanosomiasis
or Visceral Leishmaniasis where drug development came almost to a stop
as the people and societies affected in resource poor settings do not
have enough resources to satisfy the "shareholder value" of
pharmaceutical companies and therefore they are neglected diseases.

As we continue to have more and more "me too" preparations for first
world conditions (you want to see my inbox with all the `Viagra and
increase your sexual performance spam?) there are diseases which kill
thousands and there is no research and some drugs are even threatened to
go out of production. So I think `non commercial reflects drugs which
are useful to doctors and patients but not for the pharmaceutical
industry.

Hope that helps

[Let's agree to use "neglected diseases". See for example the Neglected
