E-drug: One World Health and DNDi (cont'd)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Both IOWH and DNDi are not-for-profit organisations committed to
researching and developing drugs for neglected diseases, such as
malaria, leishmaniasis, human African trypanosomiasis, and Chagas
disease, that affect the poorer populations in tropical countries. Both
organisations have analysed the crisis in lack of drugs for these
diseases -- the former from the perspective of research scientists and
the latter from the perspective of doctors in the field. Both
organisations have concluded that the need for new drugs for these
diseases is great and are aiming to meet this need.

IOWH is a US-based private organisation. DNDi is an international
initiative whose founding group comprises four public medical
research organisations (the Brazilian Fiocruz, the Indian Council for
Medical Research, the Malaysian Ministry of Health, and the Kenya
Medical Research Insitute representing a wider AfricaDNDi network),
the French Institut Pasteur, and the humanitarian medical aid
organisation Medecins Sans Frontieres / Doctors without Borders,
with WHO/TDR on board as a permanent observer.

The problem is vast and its resolution needs more collaborative
initiatives such as IOWH and DNDi working towards developing new
treatments for neglected diseases.
