[E-druggers may remember the lively debate in this forum on the
Australian Pharmaceutical Benefit Scheme. Maybe Australians have
started to become aware of the implications of Wooldridge's
disastrous policy decisions. Distributed as fair use. HH]

Wooldridge to quit
HEALTH Minister Michael Wooldridge from Australia is to step
down from parliament at the upcoming election.
Dr Wooldridge called a press conference in Canberra to announce
his decision.
"My children are young I've been a frontbencher for the whole of
their lives...and I don't wish to be an absent father any more," he
said.
He became health minister when the Howard government was first
elected in 1996, holding the post ever since.
Dr Wooldridge became embroiled in the so-called scan scam over
the backdating by radiologists for expensive diagnostic machines to
take advantage of a Medicare rebates included in the 1998 Budget.
He has also been at the centre of a dispute with Australian Medical
Association president Kerryn Phelps.
