E-DRUG: Pharmacists MPH program Univ Western Cape -Applications close end of August
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi E-Druggers in Africa,
The University of Western Cape in South Africa (UWC) is planning to launch a pharmaceuticals stream within their MPH Programme in 2015. This will mean that students, especially pharmacists who want to study public health, will be able to take elective courses on Understanding Pharmaceutical Systems, Promoting Rational Medicines Use and Supply Change Management.
I will be involved in teaching some of these pharmacy related courses together with MSH staff working in South Africa and with the excellent faculty at UWC.
In addition each student would be expected to do their mini thesis research on a pharmaceuticals related topic. In the past pharmacists who are I hope also E-Druggers have been very successful with taking this MPH programme of study. One pharmacist that I know was accepted into a PhD programme in Europe on the basis of his MPH mini Thesis!
All of the courses are offered with a Distance learning format and there are Summer and Winter Schools held in Cape Town when there are opportunities for face to face teaching with your professors. These occur in February and June/July each year. The Distance Learning courses are being developed with assistance from experts at the Tropical Institute in Antwerp and the UWC educational team.
So if you are working in Africa in public health pharmacy can I encourage you to apply for the programme. The closing date for applications is the end of August but the process to apply is a bit demanding. You are required to write a mini test that demonstrates that you can read a public health paper and write about the paper in a way that the application review committee can assess if you would be able to do the work for the MPH.
It is my belief that for Pharmacists to get the recognition they deserve as integral members of the Ministry of Health core teams in different countries, we need to have pharmacists with MPHs who know the jargon and understand public health principles and approaches.
Medicines often amount to 40 or 50 percent of Ministries of Health budgets and yet the people making decisions about these budgets may not have training in pharmacy. What we need is people who have BOTH public health and pharmacy training and skills.
There are many other people who may wish to apply. I am thinking of those who work for WHO in country offices, or for NGOs such as Mission Organizations such as EPN or MSF etc. who would benefit from such training. But to get to do the elective courses that are Pharmacy system specific you have to do the core courses so that you understand public health first.
I am attaching to this message a short blurb and a long blurb about the programme. I hope some E-Druggers will be able to apply.
