E-drug: Physiology abstracts
---------------------------------------------

Physiology abstracts on the World Wide Web available via email!

The American Physiological Society (APS) is collaborating with SatelLife
on a project called APSsat. APSsat supports the utilization of an
electronic tool called GetWeb to retrieve information from APStracts, a
database which is available on the World Wide Web. SatelLife developed
GetWeb for health professionals, especially in the developing world,
who lack a direct Internet connection to access the textual content of
documents on the World Wide Web. GetWeb has been configured to
interact with APStracts, the weekly on-line notice of research articles
and corresponding abstracts currently scheduled to be published in
the journals of The American Physiological Society. Using a series of
electronic mail commands, APStracts can be accessed and searched from
around the world.

GetWeb employs a two-step process to access APStracts (Years
1994-1998):

1) Searching the database to locate citations
2) Retrieving specific abstracts from the citations

1. HOW TO USE GETWEB TO SEARCH APStracts for citations
--------------------------------------------------------

For example, if you wish to locate information on the functioning of the
thyroid receptor:

* Compose a new message to the following address:

  getweb@usa.healthnet.org

* Leave the subject line blank.

* In the body of the message, type SEARCH, then aps and the specific
year (94-97) followed by the keywords of interest (without the
brackets):

      SEARCH aps<year> <keyword(s)>

      For example,

      SEARCH aps97 thyroid receptor

* To prevent your signature file or any other automatically inserted
text from causing an error as it is processed by the GetWeb server,
enclose your commands in a begin/end block as shown below.

      begin

      SEARCH aps97 thyroid receptor

      end

The GetWeb server ignores any text that appears before or after the
block. Remember to leave an empty line between the commands.

* Send the message.

When SatelLife receives your message, the GetWeb server searches
APStracts and retrieves a list of citations matching the keywords you
specified. GetWeb will then format these search results as plain text
and return them to you as an e-mail message similar to the following:
