COURSE ANNOUNCEMENT

PROMOTING RATIONAL DRUG USE

18th April - 2nd May 2004

Lahore, Pakistan.

A two-week course for physicians, pharmacists, health programme
managers, officials from ministries of health, universities,
non-governmental organizations, private sector, and other interested
organizations and individuals in improving the use of drugs.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

The course will focus on methods of studying and remedying inappropriate
drug use, including problems with ways in which drugs are prescribed,
dispensed and consumed. Participants will learn practical approaches for
applying key concepts such as essential drug lists, indicators of drug
use, and methods for changing inappropriate drug use behaviour.

COURSE DESIGN

The course will be conducted in English and will consist of
presentations, discussions, group activities, and fieldwork. This course
is highly participatory, and the exchange of skills and experience among
participants adds depth to the learning process. Course materials are
based on those developed by Management Sciences for Health, the Harvard
Drug Policy Group, World Health Organization (WHO), and International
Network for Rational Use of Drugs (INRUD) country core groups The
participants will be exposed to a wide range of international
experiences and materials.

TRAINERS:

Dr Stephen Lonsdale is a UK General Practitioner who left full time
practice twelve years ago to work for WHO in Malawi as a Prescriber
Training Officer. Since leaving Malawi in 1995 he has been a facilitator
for training courses in Rational Drug Use (RDU) in over a dozen
countries. In Pakistan last year he organised two short RDU courses for
WHO with help from the Network for Consumer Protection.

Dr Sri Suryawati is the Head of Clinical Pharmacology Department,
Director of the Center for Clinical Pharmacology and Drug Policy
Studies, and the Director of the Postgraduate Programme on Drug Policy
and Management, Gadjah Mada University, Yogyakarta. She is a member of
the WHO Advisory Panel for Drug Policy and Management. Dr Suryawati has
been working in promoting the quality use of medicines since 1987,
especially in developing innovative strategies for use by health
managers and hospital drugs and therapeutics committees to improve
prescribing practices.

Dr Kathleen Holloway is a medical officer with the department of
Essential Drugs and Medicines policy in WHO, Geneva. She worked for 10
years as a clinician in the UK National Health Service and then 10 years
in both clinical medicine and public health in Asia. Her experience in
Asia includes managing a small hospital where malaria was the most
prevalent disease and managing TB and Leprosy control and essential
drugs programmes.

Azhar Hussein is a pharmacist working with TheNetwork for Consumer
Protection as Project Coordinator Pharmaceuticals. At TheNetwork he
handles the issues related to the improved availability, affordability,
quality, safe use and rational use of pharmaceuticals. He is a visiting
faculty member Hamdard Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences at Hamdard
University, Islamabad campus and lectures at the Health Services Academy
in the Drug Policy and Planning Course. He has worked on the monitoring
and evaluation of national drug policy using WHO Indicators and also as
a Marketing Manager with a Pharmaceutical company.

COURSE FEE AND APPLICATION

The fee of US$ 2500 covers tuition, course materials, 3 meals a day and
shared accommodation in a deluxe hotel. Those requiring single
accommodation should ask for rates which are available on request.
Participants will be provided US$ 10.00 per day to cover miscellaneous
expenses. Participants should plan to bring sufficient money for
incidental expenses like laundry, postage, telephone calls, souvenirs,
airport tax, transportation, etc. Airfare and health insurance are the
responsibility of the sponsoring organization. Participants should also
expect to receive 12 kg of training materials. Course location and
lodging will be at two venues first week will be at Hotel Pearl
Continental TheMall Lahore (Tel: 00-92-42-111-505-505) and second week
will be at Hotel Pearl Continental Bhurban (Tel: 00-92-51-427082) which
is a mountain resort. Transport between the two venues would be arranged
by the organizers. Applications and fees are due no later than March 15,
