E-DRUG: PTC Committees

E-drug: PTC Committees
------------------------------------

Dear E-druggers,

South Africa has recently launched a new set of Standard Treatment
Guidelines for hospital levels. All 691 drugs used in these 300 STGs
have been included in the revised EDL for South Africa.
Electronic copies will be available soon - watch this space!

For our implementation strategy we are considering the
involvement of provincial, regional, district and hospital based
Pharmaco Therapeutic Committees (PTC).

We had an interesting discussion on PTC Committees in E-drug last
year (see the E-drug archives at
http://www.healthnet.org/programs/edrug.html#archives )

The South African Drug Action Programme (SADAP) would like to re-open
this discussion. We have the following specific questions:

1. are PTC committees effective in prioritising Essential Drug
concepts beyond a discussion of a hospital formulary?

2. can PTCs help in getting doctors to accept STGs and protocols?
Evidence? Publications of success/failure?

3. can PTCs help in budgeting for drugs (ie can they be the forum
where financial managers, doctors and pharmacists meet to prepare
optimal drug budgets?)

4. do PTCs have an impact on (ir)rational use of drugs?

5. any experiences with hospital drug use indicators? (We got the
Australian and WHO/INRUD materials)

6. anybody has PTC training material (self-help, long distance or
short courses etc)? Experiences with training programmes?

Your comments, suggestions for literature are very welcome at
email: bannew@hltrsa.pwv.gov.za

We will collate the responses and feed them back to the list.

Thanks!
