E-drug: Re: Access to AIDS treatment in Honduras (contd)
----------------------------------------------------------
There are millions of patients in Africa with untreated HIV and AIDS. In
South Africa at the moment the Aids epidemic is enormous and increasing. The
government is not able to treat them all, or even more than a very small
proportion. There are locally about one thousand sufferers of AIDS and
perhaps 8,000 HIV positive out of a total population of 200,000. The
government hospital has 130 beds here, the drug budget is being squeezed,
and we cannot afford any expensive treatments or to block beds with patients
on amfotericin etc. for weeks even if we could afford the amfotericin.
Any suggestions?
