E-drug: Re: Adm org of universities of medicin and pharmacy (cont'd)
----------------------------------------------------------

Dear colleagues,

I think that John Urquhart is somewhat naive about Holland. In fact,
so much research, especially in clinical pharmacology, internal
medicine and cardiology by (mainly the pharmaceutical) industry
and no longer by the government or the research councils, that
conflicts of interests have become a real threat. As an example: The
whole of postgraduate teaching for internists is funded by industry
(mainly Hoechst). Two chairs of clinical pharmacology are now fully
paid by a subsidiary of the Organisation of the Dutch
Pharmaceutical Industry Nefarma, and one chair is occupied by a
doctor who is for 9/10 of his time an employee of Organon. This is
NOT the fault of industry but of the ministries of Health and
Education who have become very reluctant to spend money on
basic research. Many other examples can be brought forward - a
process of gradual Americanization. Same as in the UK!

Best wishes.
