E-drug: Re: African TRIPS amendment in African Trade Bill
----------------------------------------------------------
To elaborate on Jaime's message:
The purpose of the amendment -- which may not be clear from a quick read
-- is to prevent the US government from challenging other countries'
policies to promote access to affordable medicine, at least in cases where
those policies comply with the TRIPS. We think this would stop the United
States from challenging compulsory licensing, parallel import and other
related policies that countries in Africa may want to pursue.
African NGOs on this list that would be interested in signing a letter
supporting the bill that contains this language should contact me
<rob@essential.org>.
This bill only concerns Africa, but we hope to have similar legislation
introduced related to the entire world.
