E-drug: Re: Economic consequences of irrational prescribing
----------------------------------------------------------
Dear Jane,
I was interested to hear of your proposed to study to estimate the
economic consequences of irrational prescribing. I worked for 6 years
in rural Nepal managing revolving drug funds for an INGO called the
Britain Nepal Medical Trust. One of the things we were particulalry
interested in and researched was the effects of different kinds of
user fee on the quality of prescribing. Part of this research involved
estimating the cost per prescription of irrational prescribing defined as
the difference between actual cost and expected cost per prescription (if
treatment were according to standard guidelines). We found that 30-50% of
total drug costs were due to irrational prescribing. Like you I found very
little literature on the economic consequences of inadequate drug
prescribing and would be very interested to hear more about your study.
Best Wishes,
