E-DRUG: Re: EU & Tropical Diseases / Pharmaceutical R&D

E-drug: Re: EU & Tropical Diseases / Pharmaceutical R&D
----------------------------------------------------------

I think that this is an interesting issue. Much can be done in developed
countries as Patrice suggests. But what about in developing countries? At
the moment many of these new drugs for treating tropical diseases are
expensive because they are treated as luxury goods incurring duties, taxes
and special levies. Just as people are advocating for tax breaks to
encourage research, I think we should also be advocating for such
lifesaving drugs being exempt from duties, taxes and levies. This would be
another way of making these drugs available at an affordable price.
