E-drug: Re: Survey on drug labelling of medicines
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Stein Lyftingsmo presents interesting information on this pilot
study. I wonder what colleagues who have worked in hospitals or
clinics in developing countries will have to say about these
findings, and the implied practice.

With respect to labelling by pharmacies, it may be argued that most
retail pharmacies in these countries could afford the time and
resources to ensure that all dispensed medicines are properly
labelled. Whether the same can be said of public hospital pharmacies,
is another matter. Consider the lack of the most basic resources in
pharmacies at these hospitals. In many instances, we find that 90%
of our clients order generic bulk products for dispensing, but
never ask for dispensing bags. Neither do they tender for their own
designed dispensing bag to be manufactured and supplied. May be this
is an aspect worth considering opposite the findings.

However, I would agree that manufacturers have no excuse for not
ensuring that labels carry the internationally required minimum
information on the product and the manufacturer.
