E-drug: Re: Treatment of Acute Otitis Media (AOM) (cont'd)
----------------------------------------------------------

Dear all,

I am a brazilian pharmacist, young, recently graduated, and
chemioterapy is not my main speciality, so, correct me if I am wrong.

1) I do believe that Peter Mansfield has good reasons to say
that "...may not be able to penetrate the abcess", so if he asked, I guess he
might have some information about the effectiveness.

2) Our moderator wrote that "80% shouldn't be treated with antibiotics but
98% are treated" (in USA and Australia). I might conclude that if it is
cured is not due to the antibiotic.

3) Carmicheal said that "most comparative trials of antimicrobial therapy in
AOM have failed to demonstrate a difference in effectiveness between
amoxicillin and any other agent."

It seems to me that thre might be only a slight (if any) difference between
amoxicillin, or any expensive substitute, and no medicine at all... Or only
a local anesthetic to reduce the pain?
(what seems to be a very nice approach to reduce undesireable effects...)

Am I very wrong?

[Note from moderator: In my opinion you are not wrong. See other postings
for useful references. However, most articles state that the situation is
different in developing countries where there seems to be justified to give
antibiotics more often. Kirsten Myhr]
