E-DRUG: rectal formulation of chloralhydrate

E-drug: rectal formulation of chloralhydrate (2)
------------------------------------------------

As an emergency physician I would not recommend the use of rectal (or oral)
chloralhydrate. It has irregular absorption resulting in a delayed onset
(about 60 min.), variable efficacy and prolonged sedation. For pediatric
sedation I would recommend one of the following:

Midazolam: 0.5-0.7 mg/kg orally (mix in apple juice with sweetner)
                0.05 mg/kg i.v.

Ketamine: 3-4 mg/kg i.m.
                0.25-0.5 mg/kg i.v., titrated to effect
                6-10 mg/kg orally
