E-DRUG: RFI: Siting of Pharmacies

Dear E-druggers,

What is the legal or practice based requirement for licensing of pharmacies in the vicinity of an existing pharmacy. Are there any restrictions with reference to siting of a pharmacy?

In Australia the critical factor to business success is being able to dispense the Government Pharmaceutical Benefits (PBS)prescriptions. Opening a pharmacy is easy - as long as you are a pharmacist - but then the ability to dispense PBS prescriptions is governed by a set of rules that prevents opening or relocating a certain distance from any other - currently 1.5 Kms. These rules are more to protect the business interests of the owner pharmacists rather than the health benefits to consumers. It is not a model I would recommend to follow. Others will know of better mechanisms I am sure.
