E-drug: SA AIDS Treatment Plan
---------------------------------------------
Congratulations To All !!!
In a statement issued today, the South African Cabinet instructed the
Department of Health to develop a detailed implementation plan by the
end of September 2003 that includes the provision of antiretroviral
(ARV) therapy in the public sector in South Africa. This is a
cheering news to all of us; soldiers in the forefront, battling this
pandemic.
This exciting news has ended all the years lost to the holocaust,
that we shall regret, but had its lessons. This news is to the credit
of Zackie Achmat, TAC, MSF and indeed everyone who had consistently
campaigned for access to treatment. HIV/AIDS is preventable and
manageable; positive living makes the prevention possible and ARV
makes management a reality.
I work in a hospital that is one of the sites for the Botswana
National ARV program [MASA], I have seen ARV bring a new dawn in the
lifes of infected patients. The Botswana government was bold and
sincere from day one; they were the ready soldiers of the war. But,
we should be happy there are now more recruits, the South African
government's move will surely have a profound effect on the battle
against HIV/AIDS in Sub-Saharan Africa.
