E-drug: SA case: IFPMA has it wrong
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
There seems to be a misunderstanding about what has happened in the South
Africa court case among some parts of the industry. See IFPMA press release
below. [The press release is in the posting 2 IFPMA press releases. KM,
moderator] There is NO settlement. All companies withdrew unconditionally.
The government of South Africa has not made any deals or agreements with
the companies. The withdrawal was unconditionally.
The IFPMA should know better because they were present yesterday in the
court room in Pretoria and have helped the South African Pharmaceutical
manufacturers Association (PMA) in the course of the proceedings. A
substantial part of the documents submitted by the PMA consisted of IFPMA
leaflets, and affidafits by Harvey Bale and Eric Neurenberg from the IFPMA.
No patient has been a winner in the last three years the drug companies
held up the SA medicines legislation. And though the industry's decision to
drop the case is a very welcome one - it was long overdue.
