E-DRUG: Selection of essential medicines at country level: using the WHO Model List
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
[The best way to make sure the most appropriate medicines are available is to make a Standard Essential Medicines List based on treatment guidelines in your own setting. When planning a health policy it is necessary to survey the disease patterns thoroughly first so the policy concerning essential medicines will be aimed at the REAL NEEDS of most of the people. The use of a basic list based on your treatment guidelines is not only the most efficient way to use the money that is available, it also provides safe and reliable treatment, and ensures that appropriate medicines will always be available. Dear E-druggers,
Perhaps last year you missed -like I did!- the publication of this important document from the WHO. It aims "to support countries in developing their own National Essential Medicines Lists and, through these lists and other medicine policy actions, to progress towards UHC and the goal of ensuring that all people and communities have access to highly effective medicines that are appropriate to their needs, affordable to individuals and health systems, and of assured quality". It is available here:
https://www.who.int/publications/i/item/9789241515443
Since the WHO Model List is being reviewed very soon, this may be the good timing to spread the document among policy-makers at country level.
With best wishes,

https://www.who.int/publications/i/item/9789241515443
