E-drug: Sources and prices of HIV/AIDS medicines (cont'd)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear E-Druggers,
We appreciate Dr Atieno Ojoo's remarks about the new edition of
"Sources and Prices of Selected Medicines and Diagnostics for
People Living With HIV/AIDS". The Sources and Prices document
tries to follow the current WHO treatment recommendations related to
HIV/AIDS. It is recognized that the listed medicines are not always in
line with the WHO Model List of Essential Medicines (April 2003). In
order to take into account differences in national treatment algo-
rithms, medicines derived from partner treatment recommendations
have also been included. In addition, some emphasis was placed on
including medicines that may be difficult to source.
Dr Ojoo correctly identified various medicines that belong to the same
therapeutic group as a medicine on the Model List. The Model list
contains a number of medicines marked with a square box symbol.
This signifies that the listed medicine is an example within a class for
which that medicine has the best evidence of cost-effectiveness and
safety. Medicines within that pharmacological class have similar
clinical performance.

As you may know the new procedures to update and disseminate the
WHO Model List of Essential Medicines came into force only in 2002.
Selection is now increasingly based on a systematic approach to
collecting and reviewing evidence and it may take some time to fully
harmonize WHO treatment guidelines and the medicines on the
Model List.

The main aim of the Sources and Prices document is to provide
market information on a range of medicines used in the treatment and
care of HIV/AIDS patients. The document is intended mainly to assist
procurement.
As we have mentioned in an earlier message, further comments and
remarks are appreciated and all will be taken into consideration when
preparing the next edition.
