E-DRUG: The use of expired e-drugs (cont)
-----------------------------------------
My approach to drug expiry is simple. Drugs expire because of poor
purchasing or storage practices. If drugs are procured in the correct
quantities on a regular basis and if they are stored and used on a First In
First Out process they do not expire. Even if drugs are only procured
annually they can be used within the expiry period.
Drugs should not expire in well managed systems. If drugs are expiring look
to the management of the system, do not start a testing program to allow
you to use outdated drugs.
When ever I have been asked to advise on an expired drug problem I have
found a problem in either procurement or stock rotation in the store.
These are relatively easy problems to solve.

[maybe some Tanzanian E-druggers could shed some light on the drug
supply problems in their country? Was it the big quantity of the Worldbank
drugs that caused this problem? WB]
