PRELIMINARY ANNOUNCEMENT

The Third African Course on Pharmacotherapy Teaching will be held
from 27 November to 2 December 2000 (inclusive) in Cape Town, South
Africa.

It is being organised jointly by members of the Department of
Pharmacology of the Health Science Faculty of the University of Cape
Town, South Africa which is a WHO Collaborating Centre. The course
is being organised in collaboration with the WHO EDM department and
the South African Drug Action Programme.

COURSE OBJECTIVES AND CONTENT.
The course is designed primarily for teachers of pharmacotherapy who
are working in undergraduate or post-graduate settings -- medical
schools, pharmacy schools, teaching hospitals etc. The course aims to
provide practical instruction in, and experience of, a problem-based
approach to pharmacotherapy teaching based on the method of the WHO
"Guide to Good Prescribing" manual.

Participants will:
-experience the problem-based approach to pharmacotherapy teaching

-learn to act as facilitators of small-group, problem-based learning
in practical pharmacotherapy

-become familiar with modern educational strategies available for
course development, student assessment, and course and tutor
evaluation.

-develop their own targets and objectives for introducing the
problem-based approach to pharmacotherapy teaching in their local
context

VENUE
The course will be held at the Graduate School of Business,
University of Cape Town Waterfront Campus, Cape Town.

FACULTY
Teaching faculty will include Dr Karen Barnes and Dr Marc Blockman
from the WHO Collaborating Center, University fo Cape Town, South
Africa and teachers from several African medical schools who are
familiar with problem based pharmacotherapy teaching.

NUMBERS
To achieve the maximum opportunities for small group work and
interactive learning the course will be limited to 30 participants.
If demand exceeds available places,preference will be given to
teachers working in the African region.

LANGUAGE
The working language of the course will be English.

FEES
Fees include all tuition,materials,accommodation and food for the
7 days of the course. The overall fee will be US$ 3000 per person.
Travel costs to and from Cape Town are not included.

SPONSORSHIP
Participants are expected to arrange for their own sponsorship (for
tuition fees, travel, accommodation), for example through direct
application to university funds, non-governmental organisations,
government funds, national essential drugs programmes, or the national
or regional WHO office. Requests for WHO sponsorship should be
endorsed by the national government. South African participants
should contact the African Course Secretariat for local sponsorship
opportunities.

APPLICATIONS
Applications are invited from teachers of undergraduate or
postgraduate health professionals who would like to explore a
problem-based approach to rational pharmacotherapy.
