E-drug: Two new documents on affordability and financing of ACTs
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear E-druggers,
Those of you interested in Artemisinin-based Combination Therapy
in malaria control may want to see two documents that have been
released by WHO last week:
1. Access to antimalarial medicines: Improving the affordability and
financing of Artemisinin-based Combination Therapies. Back-
ground document for Roll Back Malaria conference, Fall 2002.
WHO/CDS/MAL/2003.1095 (Ed. Hilbrand Haak) (pdf - 216KB)
http://mosquito.who.int/cmc_upload/0/000/016/745/37268_ACT
_final2.pdf
2. Improving access to antimalarial medicines - Roll Back Malaria
Partnership Meeting, September 30 - October 2, 2003. World
Health Organisation. WHO/CDS/RBM/2003.44 (pdf, 840KB)
http://mosquito.who.int/cmc_upload/0/000/016/746/2002-sept
_meeting.pdf
The first paper was prepared for the Roll Back Malaria Partnership
Meeting, reported in the second document. It presents the background
for discussing financing policies for ACTs in countries with the highest
malaria burden and suffering the consequences of increasing drug
resistance. The paper builds on knowledge and experience of WHO
in essential drug management, drug financing and affordability, and
that of Roll Back Malaria in antimalarial drug supply to countries
around the world. Pricing of antimalarial drugs and projections for the
future are being discussed, as well as current antimalarial drug
financing mechanisms and what consumers actually pay for treating
malaria. Based on this information, options for improving antimalarial
drug policies in the worst malaria-endemic countries are being
addressed.
Those who want to learn about country examples in applying ACTs,
the current state of Roill Bacvk Malaria efforts, and current research
efforts may want to download the second document, presenting the
proceedings of the Roll Back Malaria Partnership Meeting in late
2002.
