[e-drug] Undergraduate pharmacotherapy teaching (cont'd)

E-drug: Undergraduate pharmacotherapy teaching (cont'd)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear E-druggers,

I have been following the discussion on the above subject from the
side line.

I would like to throw some light on the teaching of pharmacology to
undergraduates in our institution which practices integrated
problem-based teaching since its inception in 1981.

Our program consists of three phases; phase I (year 1), phase II (year
2 and 3) and phase III (year 4 and 5). Phase I covers basic sciences
which is taught based on systems of the body. During phase II
students go in rotations of organ/system blocks where clinical
subjects are introduced and taught together with basic sciences.
Phase III is rather similar to the conventional teaching. Pharmacology
is taught throughout all the 3 phases; in phase I general pharmacology
is taught, in phase II pharmacology is taught according to the systems
and in phase III therapeutics is taught during medical, pediatrics and
surgical postings. I have presented our teaching method during the
Asean Clinical Pharmacology Meeting in Yokyakarta, Indonesia, in
1993.
