E-drug: Unsafe injections in Pakistan (cont)
---------------------------------------------
Dear friends,
Is the practice of unsafe injections only confined to Pakistan? I have seen
this being practiced in almost all of South East Asia. This is not only
confined to the use of injectables for intramuscular administration but more
dangerously for intravenous use. One can imagine the havoc that this route
can cause if used by the uninitiated.
The reuse of disposable syringes is linked directly to the economic outlook
of people. In India it is a common refrain, "nothing is disposable" and I
have come across some serious discussions on reuse of disposables in reputed
journals.
There is an urgent need to train our middle level health staff regarding
the safety issues involved and cautioning the senior staff against not
succumbing to patient pressure for the routine use of injections.
