E-drug: Unused medicines in U.S.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
---
[One of the topics in donations is the 'double standard', i.e. that
developed countries normally do not allow medicines to be returned to
pharmacies or given to other patients, but are happy to donate such
medicines to poorer countries. If in the US medicines are returned and
donated to poor people, it is probably without consent of FDA. Unless
you find your response have general interest, please approach Susan
directly. KM]
To Whom It May Concern,
I am a reporter with Reuters news agency in Washington, D.C. who is
looking into doing a story on patients and families who are donating
leftover or unused medicines to other people who would otherwise not be
able to buy them. While this trend has occurred in the U.S. with drugs
being sent to poorer countries overseas, I am interested in finding out
if this is happening more with the drugs simply going to other
Americans, either because of rising prices, evaporating insurance
coverage or shrinking state aid programs.
If anyone would be willing to provide me with information -- either
on-the-record or on background -- please contact me at
sheavey@reuters.com or 202-898-8300.
Many thanks in advance for your help!
Sincerely
Susan Heavey,
