THE FTC RECEIVED APPROVAL FROM THE BUSH ADMINISTRATION TO CONDUCT A PROBE
OF WHETHER THE DRUG INDUSTRY CONSPIRES TO KEEP
LOWER-COST GENERIC DRUGS OUT OF CONSUMERS' HANDS.
The study may subpoena 90 drugmakers and will investigate deals in which
brand-name companies allegedly pay their generic counterparts to keep
lower-cost drugs off
the market, as well as investigate patents added by brand-name companies to
existing products just as the original patents are about to expire, USA
Today reported. The
probe won approval by the Office of Management and Budget.
