E-DRUG: Use of ceftriaxone in poor countries (7)
---------------------------------------------
Dear colleagues,
According to information obtained from my colleague from a small
municipality Rahovec (23.000 inhabitants in town and about 73.000
inhabitants in total), annual sales of injectable antibiotics in his
community pharmacy is as following (estimated):
1. Ceftriaxone 1 g inj 4000-5000 ampoules
2. Lincomycin 600 mg inj 3000 ampoules
3. Gentamycin (all strength) 3000 ampoules
4. Procain benzylpenicillin 1000 ampoules
Estimated number of consumers/day is 400. There are 6 pharmacies in town (one is operating with no pharmacist).
Republic of Kosova is one of the poorest European countries and since
January 2007 all medicines in community pharmacies (all private) are
purchased out of pocket by patients.
